Department Head (Academic Administrator)

The Department of Statistics within the Eberly College of Science at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader for the position of Department Head. The position is open to candidates who have a PhD in Statistics or a related field, and credentials for appointment as a full professor. Some previous leadership experience in academic or professional environments is desirable.

The Penn State Eberly College of Science Department of Statistics has world-renowned faculty who are members of international collaborations that are making significant discoveries and seeking to improve life throughout the world. Its scientists and alumni have made pioneering contributions to the fields of astronomy, bioinformatics and genomics, business analytics, climate change and the environment, statistics education, high-dimensional data, infectious disease dynamics, machine learning, network science, and time series, among others, and have membership and representation in or awards from many internationally recognized organizations, such as the International Prize in Statistics, National Academy of Sciences, National Medal of Science, International Astronomical Union, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and many others.

The department offers Ph.D., M.S., M.A.S., and B.S. degree programs in statistics and jointly administers a B.S. in data sciences with two other academic colleges. Faculty members include 17 assistant, 12 associate, and 14 full professors across our teaching, research, and tenure tracks. The department ranks in the top 20 in the U.S. (U.S. News & World Report) and top 30 internationally (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects) as well as in the top five for online programs (U.S. News & World Report).

Reporting to the dean, the department head provides visionary leadership to all aspects of the departmental mission, is the representative of the department to senior leadership across the university and is responsible for ensuring the fiscal health of the department, including securing the necessary resources to successfully implement its strategic priorities and mission. To succeed in these objectives, the department head must be a collaborative and inspiring leader who is committed to promoting excellence and cohesion across all aspects of the department. They must have a collaborative approach to expand the research of the department by building relationships with university leadership, external stakeholders, and with other programs, departments, and institutes throughout the university. The head must be committed to maintaining national prominence in statistics education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, both in-person and via our long-standing productive partnership with Penn State's World Campus. The head must also have a proven track record of excellence in teaching and research, and act as a champion for the diverse set of teaching, research, and outreach programs in the department.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a commitment to fostering diverse excellence in the classroom, department, and University. Evidence of prior successful and high-impact initiatives in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space is desirable.
