Position description

The University of California, Berkeley is expanding its research and teaching activity in the field of Quantum Information Science (QIS). This broadly encompasses computation, sensing and measurement, simulation, communication, and related areas, as part of Berkeley's Quantum Initiative.

This search is for a tenure track, assistant professor position. It is expected to result in recruitment of a new faculty member, who will engage with Berkeley's strong existing programs in QIS that encompass various departments, and who will participate in leading future explorations of the fascinating consequences of quantum mechanics for increased understanding of our world and the development of advanced technologies.

The Department of Physics, together with its partners the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Math, the College of Chemistry, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is searching for a new faculty member who is committed to research and teaching in QIS, and who has experimental and/or theoretical expertise. It is the intention of these partnering departments to recruit several faculty in the QIS area over the next few years. A discussion with candidates, on their potential appointments in various partner departments, is possible.

The Department of Physics and its partners are committed to establishing cultures that nurtures scientific identity and remove barriers to entry, in order to strengthen pathways into careers. To that end, we strive to work and learn together in an environment free of harassment, exploitation, or intimidation. Please visit UC Berkeley Physics' Diversity & Inclusion website for more information.

Berkeley has a long history of excellence in teaching, research, and service, as well as a culture that values and promotes interdisciplinarity. It has a compelling record of national and global engagement, and benefits from strong relationships with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and other research labs and industry. Together with its partners, Berkeley is actively expanding an integrative initiative in quantum information science and technology spanning quantum theory, experiment, engineering, and applications. As a next step in the Quantum Initiative, this search will identify a strong new contributor for the campus.

We seek candidates who will develop impactful and novel research programs, who will commit to excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate education, and who will contribute to broader campus goals of mentoring the next generation of leaders. We encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds and institutions. Berkeley is committed to addressing personal and family needs of faculty. For more information, refer to OFEW New Faculty site.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. Consistent with this commitment, UC Berkeley requires all applicants for Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload an Authorization of Information Release form into AP Recruit as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, applicants will only be subject to reference checks if and when they are selected as the candidate to whom the hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer. More information is available on this website.
