Position Description The Department of Applied Mathematics (https://engineering.ucsc.edu/departments/applied-mathematics) in the Baskin School of Engineering (BE) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor. The Teaching Professor series is a full-time faculty appointment (not a lecturer appointment) that parallels the tenure-track Professor series. The Teaching Professor track is distinguished from the Professor track in that it is designed to meet the long-term instructional needs of the University that cannot be best fulfilled by an appointee in the Professor series. The primary responsibility for appointees in the Teaching Professor series is teaching and teaching-related tasks, and a secondary responsibility is professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, including creative activity, especially as such activities relate to instruction and pedagogy. The faculty in this series also have a responsibility for University and public service. Note that the Department of Applied Mathematics is part of the Baskin School of Engineering and is a distinct unit from the Department of Mathematics in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. The Applied Mathematics group has a longstanding tradition of collaborative work for the development of mathematical methods to solve critical real world problems in science, technology and engineering. Areas of expertise include fluid dynamics, computational control theory and dynamical systems, computational systems biology, scientific machine learning and uncertainty quantification. The department oversees a curriculum that includes classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels that are relevant campus-wide. The department hosts an undergraduate program in Applied Mathematics, a minor in Applied Mathematics, two Masters level degrees (one in Applied Mathematics and one in Scientific Computing and Applied Mathematics) and a doctoral program leading to a PhD degree in Applied Mathematics. Depending on qualifications, the Academic Title will be Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or Teaching Professor (equivalent to Lecturer with Potential of Security of Employment, Lecturer with Security of Employment, or Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment). The Assistant Teaching Professor rank is a full-time position with the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate. It has the payroll title Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE). An LPSOE is eligible for promotion to “Security of Employment” which is analogous to tenure. Teaching, professional achievement, and University and public service constitute the criteria for advancement. Appointees to this title must have a record of intellectual leadership in instruction as documented by materials demonstrating that the candidate has made recognized contributions to the teaching and learning of the subject. The Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor ranks mirror the tenure track Associate Professor and Professor ranks. The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject.
