Position Description:

Research Software Developer
Center for Communications Research, Princeton

The Center for Communications Research, Princeton (CCR Princeton) is seeking research software developers with extraordinary computer programming abilities to help develop software, maintain our suite of existing tools, and assist our research team through a combination of programming and data science.

Who We Are:

CCR Princeton and its sister institutions, CCR La Jolla and CCS Bowie, form the Center for Communications and Computing, a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) that is a division of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). We work under long-term contract to the National Security Agency to address scientific problems related to its mission.

Our Work:

We are a collaborative research institution where the solution to challenging mathematical problems often requires using sophisticated software tools and developing our own code. A research software developer would work with our research staff to improve coding practices and optimize research code for large-scale computation on our high performance computing (HPC) resources. They would develop and maintain sustainable research code bases, and maintain existing commercial and open source software tools. A research developer would also be responsible for identifying new tools and techniques to improve the development environment at CCR Princeton. Since big data is such an important part of modern data science applications, the research developer would be responsible for helping curate and prepare large data sets. They may also assist directly in the research effort by applying computer and data science techniques to problems of interest.

Each summer, we hold an intensive ten-week program, SCAMP (Summer Conference on Applied Mathematical Problems), where researchers from academia, government, and industry come in to collaborate with our research staff on focused problems that change from year to year. During this time, a research software developer would assist in getting the visitors comfortable and productive in our computing environment and contribute directly to these focused research efforts. After the program ends, they would facilitate tech transfer of research code to operational systems.

Location and Requirements:

CCR Princeton is in central New Jersey, which is a great place to live with excellent schools in the area. In addition to easy access to New York City and Philadelphia, Princeton is a bikeable, cosmopolitan town with high-quality options for dining and the arts.

You must be a US citizen and be able to obtain a certification satisfying DoD 8570.1-M, IAT-2 as well as an appropriate security clearance, which we will sponsor. There may be an option to begin work without a security clearance, performing unclassified work while awaiting clearance. The start date for this position is flexible.

The position requires a Bachelors degree, preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or related technical field, and at least 2 years of software development experience, which may include course work and internships while in college. Applicants should have strong programming skills in Python along with at least one of C/C++, Rust, or Fortran, and proficiency with object-oriented design and algorithm development. Experience with software build systems and installing and maintaining software in a Unix environment is also required.

Benefits and How to Apply:

CCR Princeton offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits, including moving expenses, medical and dental insurance, generous 11% contribution towards an employee’s retirement plan, HSA or FSA, life and disability insurance. Our facility is designed around personal offices with separate collaborative spaces and features an on-site gym. Our work schedule is extremely flexible and offers a healthy work-life balance with generous vacation time.

To apply, please use to submit a current resume and statement about programming and software development skills or email those documents to
