Position Description

The Department of Mathematics at Bowdoin College invites applications for two full-time, five-year lecturer appointments beginning July 1, 2024. We look forward to welcoming individuals who share our goal of fostering an inclusive mathematical community through exemplary teaching, mentoring, and outreach.  The teaching load is five courses per year, focused on our calculus and introductory mathematics courses. These appointments are part of a targeted five-year curricular and pedagogical initiative to explore strategies for meeting the quantitative needs of our student body; the successful candidates will be key partners in departmental efforts to support students who are beginning their mathematical journey at Bowdoin College. Pending assessment of this initiative in the context of institutional needs and priorities, ongoing lecturer-track positions in the department may become available.

We seek applications from candidates in all fields of mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. A Ph.D. is expected by the time of appointment. Applicants should have completed at least four semesters of teaching as the primary instructor or instructor of record. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. In all areas, we evaluate a candidate's experiences in the context of their career stage.

While an active research program is neither required nor expected as part of this position, Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development including robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks. Students form the core of our community. The mathematics major is one of the largest at Bowdoin College but still retains an intimate and engaging culture that attempts to cultivate the spark of learning in each of its members. Each year, our introductory courses reach over a quarter of the student body, whose academic interests range across the majors offered at the College. Our courses highlight mathematics as a liberal art, as Bowdoin College does not offer engineering or business courses. In addition to engaging classroom dynamics, we benefit from student-faculty lunches and a variety of seminar series focusing on faculty research, teaching practice, and topics of interest to students.
