Position Description
The Department of Mathematical Sciences seeks an exceptional candidate for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the mathematics of data science. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of significant research achievements in the mathematics of data science; strong potential for obtaining external research funding in the area; relevant knowledge and willingness to engage in meeting department and university teaching and service needs in data science; experiences showing promise of effective teaching at the undergraduate level; interest in advising and teaching at the PhD level; and a commitment to creating an inclusive classroom environment. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen and broaden multiple research initiatives in the department and on campus, such as the Data Science Institute (dsi.udel.edu) and to enhance our undergraduate programs in mathematics and data science and our dual-degree MS in data science with PhD in mathematics or applied mathematics. Applicants must have received a doctoral degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline by the start date of the position. Research-active faculty typically have a 2–1 teaching load. Compensation packages are highly competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AT UD: The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware (mathsci.udel.edu) is within the College Arts and Sciences and strives to create a diverse and inclusive environment in the workplace. It has about 30 research-active faculty in the areas of analysis, discrete mathematics, computational and applied mathematics (including mathematical biology and medicine, fluids and materials science, and inverse problems), probability, mathematics of quantum science, and mathematics education. The department has a strong record of attracting external research funding, and the university has an active data science research community (dsi.udel.edu). The department offers doctoral programs in mathematics and applied mathematics, with an enrollment of about 50 PhD students, and offers a dual-degree PhD with a masters in data science. It also offers undergraduate programs in mathematics, actuarial sciences, applied mathematics, math and data science, math and economics, and secondary math education.
