Position Description
The Department of Mathematics and the Computational Data Science Program at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota invites applications for an open rank tenure-track faculty position to begin in the fall of 2024. Successful candidates will have expertise in any area of Data Science and a PhD in a related field and should be able to teach introductory and advanced courses in data science, programming, statistics, and innovative and interdisciplinary offerings in their area of interest. Candidates are expected to periodically teach First Year Seminar and general education courses. We welcome candidates with demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and a record of engagement with evidence-based pedagogy and are especially eager to add to our curriculum new courses that incorporate high-impact practices and interdisciplinary collaboration. Successful candidates will demonstrate readiness to develop a high-impact, productive research program involving undergraduate researchers. Our department aims to apply contemporary pedagogy to foster student success and build a welcoming community for students majoring in all disciplines. We actively collaborate with each other to achieve these goals. We offer two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Applied Mathematics and another in Computational Data Science. We also work closely with colleagues in other fields, from Physics and Biology to Economics and Education, to provide a strong mathematics and data science education within the context of the liberal arts. Nearly all Hamline students take a course in our department to complete their general education requirements, providing us with a unique opportunity to impact every student on campus. The Department of Mathematics is actively building the community between faculty and students, for example, through Math Tea and interdisciplinary seminar series. The mission of Hamline University is to create a diverse and collaborative community of learners dedicated to the development of students' knowledge, values, and skills for successful lives of leadership, scholarship, and service. Hamline ranks highly in economic mobility for graduates. Our student body is reflective of the diverse community in the Twin Cities — approximately 70% of Hamline students come from traditionally underserved backgrounds. 48% of incoming students identify as first-generation college students, 46% as BIPOC students, and 43% receive Pell Grants (2023 Fast Facts). The Department of Mathematics is committed to serving all Hamline’s students, with a particular interest in equitable access for students with identities typically not invited into Mathematics and Data Science. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated interest in supporting this commitment. The faculty member in this position will have the support and opportunities that Hamline provides for all new faculty, starting with the Dean's New Faculty Seminar - a year-long orientation to Hamline systems and processes as well as ongoing professional development. Hamline tenure-track faculty typically teach 6 courses annually, with a course release in the first year for professional development and a semester pre-tenure release pending successful third-year review. Applications received by December 5, 2023 will receive full consideration and the position will remain open until filled.
