Position Description:

3-year Postdoc in Number Theory

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University (Prague) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Number Theory.

The position will be funded by Dr. Yatsyna's project "Statistical properties of totally real number fields". Knowledge of Czech is not necessary; teaching is negotiable but will typically consist of one advanced course (in number theory or a related area, taught in English) per semester. Due to the restrictions of the funding agency, applicants must have received their Ph.D. within the last 8 years (exceptions are possible in cases of parental leave and long-term sickness).

The expected duration of the position is September 1, 2024 – August 31, 2027 (negotiable).

Besides this position, another successful candidate may be offered a 1-year position funded by Prof. Kala's project "UFOCLAN: Universal Quadratic Forms and Class Numbers" (approx. July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025).

Strong applicants from all areas of number theory (broadly interpreted) are welcome to apply, although preference may be given to algebraic and/or computational number theory, particularly those relating to the theory of lattices, integral quadratic forms, heights, and geometry of numbers.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University is the leading institution in mathematics in Czechia, with highly motivated and well-educated students in our mathematics programs. The School of Mathematics has about 110 academic positions, covering most of the major areas of mathematics. The Department of Algebra, where the position will be hosted, offers an open-minded international environment with outstanding conditions for independent research. We currently have about 15 permanent and 15 postdoctoral employees, including approx. 20 international researchers and 4 number theorists. More information can be found at the faculty website and the websites of Pavlo Yatsyna and Vitezslav Kala.
