Position Description:

The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science (CAOS), a unit of the Department of Mathematics within the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University seeks candidates for one (1) open-rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin in September 2024. Faculty members are expected to be outstanding scholars and to participate in teaching at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral.

We seek to develop our strength at the interface between machine learning and science, leveraging advances in data science. Machine learning has the possibility of transforming our ability to model multi-scale physics, chemistry, and biology. We are particularly focused on expanding in the area of data science for physics applications (e.g., fluid dynamics, climate science) and computational applied sciences with machine learning.

This search is part of a cluster hire in Predicting Climate Change and its Impacts: From the Global to Urban Scale that includes the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science in the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Civil and Urban Engineering in the Tandon School of Engineering, and the Center for Data Science. Advances in climate science prediction will require transformative developments in and between mathematics, data science, computer science, physics, engineering, and geoscience. More information about this cluster, and NYU's broader Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative, can be found here, and here. A few faculty positions will be advertised as part of this cluster search, with the intention of creating a diverse, interdisciplinary cohort to devise cutting-edge research and curricular development.

The Center for Data Science (CDS) is the focal point for New York University’s university-wide efforts in Data Science. The Center was established in 2013 to advance NYU’s goal of creating a world-leading Data Science training and research facility and arming researchers and professionals with the tools to harness the power of Big Data. Today, CDS counts 20 jointly appointed interdisciplinary faculty housed on three floors of our magnificent 60 5th Avenue building, one of New York City’s historic properties. It is home to a top-ranked MS in Data Science program, one of the first Ph.D. programs in Data Science, and a new undergraduate program in Data Science, as well as a lively Fellow and Postdoctoral program. It has over 60 associate and affiliate faculty from 25 departments in 9 schools and units. With cross-disciplinary research and innovative educational programs, CDS is shaping the new field of Data Science.

The Courant Institute’s Mathematics Department is a world-renowned center for applied mathematics (including math for data science and machine learning), scientific computing, PDEs, analysis, probability, geometry, and other fields. Courant is also the home of NYU’s Department of Computer Science, which is a leader in machine learning and AI, among other fields.

CDS and the Courant Institute (both Math and CS) host vibrant interdisciplinary PhD programs and a number of faculty hold joint appointments at the Center for Data Science and the Courant Institute.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $125,000 - $185,000.

Qualifications A Ph.D. in applied math and/or applied physics or a related quantitative field is required.

Application Instructions Applications can be submitted through our Interfolio application page. Please include a cover letter, CV, a short statement of your research and teaching interests, and at least three confidential recommendation letters. We encourage applicants to include a brief statement describing how your research, teaching, and service contribute to diversity and inclusion.
