POSITION We offer a 2-year position as a postdoctoral researcher in the Science of Cities group, led by Frank Neffke, at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna. We are looking for excellent candidates who are highly motivated to apply modern quantitative methods to study local labor markets in times of structural transformation. The successful applicant will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team of researchers with backgrounds in economics, economic geography, computer science, and complexity science. Possible topics include the study of the relation between skills and technological change, between migration and structural transformation, labor market consequences of the green transition, and the spatial footprints of multiregional and multinational firms. RESEARCH GROUP The position is part of the Science of Cities research group at the Complexity Science Hub. The research group‘s goal is to understand broadly the role of cities and urban systems as places where large, complex teams, and value chains can be coordinated. To do so, it aims to be at the forefront of using advanced statistical and data-science tools to analyze the people, firms, and regions involved in scientific, technological, and industrial transformation. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES ▪ support the scientific mission of the Science of Cities group and the wider CSH community through publications and research projects; ▪ collaborate with scientists at CSH with the aim to write high-quality academic papers on this topic; ▪ participate in an international network of scholars, including the Santa Fe Institute and the Growth Lab at Harvard University. ▪ help develop the research agenda of the Science of Cities group, including grant writing and outreach activities; ▪ postdoctoral candidates are furthermore expected to help coach PhD students and other junior members of the team. YOUR PROFILE ▪ background in economics, management science, economic geography, or related fields with a strong interest and understanding of working with large datasets; or ▪ background in computer science, physics, applied mathematics or related fields with a strong interest in economics, management science and economic geography; ▪ proficient in data analysis using Python/R and/or STATA; WE OFFER The successful applicant will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team and be able to acquire skills in the use of large scale datasets, machine learning and natural language processing, regression analysis and causal inference, and complex network analysis. The Science of Cities group maintains several research collaborations with the Growth Lab at Harvard University. Furthermore, as part of the Complexity Science Hub, the Science of Cities group offers a dynamic, creative, internationally oriented, appreciative, and open working environment. The Complexity Science Hub hosts scholars with a wide variety of backgrounds and is an excellent place to acquire and/or deepen skills in data science, data visualization, as well as mathematical modeling and computational social science. The variety of projects at the Complexity Science Hub will allow the successful candidate to engage in new and timely topics and to collaborate with world renowned scientists.
