Position Description:    

The Department of Biology and the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana State University (ISU) invite applications for a joint tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialty in Bioinformatics. Both departments are comprised of faculty with active and collaborative research programs in a wide variety of specialties.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers both undergraduate and master’s programs. Our undergraduate program includes degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, and data science. Our online master’s program offers both MA and MS degrees, which require completing a faculty-directed research project. The mathematics faculty pursue a broad range of research interests, including dynamical systems, statistics, applied mathematics, and foundations of machine learning.

The Department of Biology includes undergraduate majors in biology and biology with a specialization in medical laboratory sciences. Additionally, it offers MS and Ph.D. programs, including an online MS in biology. The successful candidate will have access to departmental facilities, including common equipment and instrumentation at the Genomics/Next-generation Sequencing Core and Cell and Tissue Culture facilities, as well as Departmental and University centers such as The Center for Genomic Advocacy; the Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and Conservation; and the Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Center.

We are seeking an innovative, energetic, and collaborative colleague who is committed to excellence in both scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant bioinformatics research program to address questions in regulatory genomics, comparative genomics, transcriptomics, systems biology, statistical genetics, or evolutionary biology. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics or equivalent with demonstrated potential for a strong research agenda either through publication record, independent research, and/or professional or postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to secure adequate funding to support a quality research program and direct undergraduate and graduate research. The successful candidate will be provided with an initial startup package to support their research program, including computational and/or laboratory resources commensurate with individual research needs.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and statistics, as well as Bioinformatics and related coursework, including relevant programming languages. The Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics could be assigned to teach any of the following courses: BIO 485 – Introduction to Biometry (3 credit hours); BIO 487 – Bioinformatics (3 credit hours); MATH 241 – Principles of Statistics (3 credit hours); MATH 341 – Probability and Statistics (3 credit hours); MATH 403/503 – Linear Algebra and Modeling for Data Science (3 credit hours); MATH 440/540 – Statistics for Data Science (3 credit hours); MATH 441/541 – Theory of Probability (3 credit hours); MATH 442/542 – Mathematical Statistics (3 credit hours); or MATH 607 – Topics in Statistics (3 credit hours).
