Position Description
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher and teacher in applied mathematics to join us as a senior lecturer or associate professor, to complement and strengthen our research groups at the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Mathematical Sciences. At the division, we conduct internationally recognized research in areas such as the theory and implementation of finite element methods, mathematical optimization, inverse wave propagation problems, kinetic equations, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric integration, biomathematics, spatial statistics, and data science.
The department and the division
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a fully integrated department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. The department has about 200 faculty and staff members and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. We teach a broad spectrum of courses across programs at the two universities. Internationally high-level research is pursued in both pure and applied mathematics, as well as in mathematical statistics.
Our academic year is divided into four quarters. The department is supportive if you wish to distribute your teaching duties within two or three quarters.
The department actively engages in collaborations with external partners, fosters innovation, and conducts outreach activities. We consider these endeavors to be integral to our research and educational mission.
Major responsibilities
You are expected to conduct independent research in applied mathematics and highly encouraged to collaborate with the researchers at our department. In addition, you are expected to actively apply for external funding for your research projects.
You will be responsible for instructing mathematics at all levels, which includes supervision of undergraduate, master's, and PhD students. Most of our educational mission is at the undergraduate level. Currently, there is a demand for additional instructors for courses in applied and computational mathematics, with a particular focus on numerical analysis for partial differential equations.
Departmental committee responsibilities are shared among all faculty members, and a portion of these duties will be assigned to you as part of your role.
Your profile
You must have a doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics or in another related field. A good record of academic research is required as well as well-documented university level teaching experience. The quality of research output takes precedence over the quantity of publications. The educational credentials hold equal importance to the research qualifications.
To be qualified for the position as associate professor you should also have a proven ability of securing reseach funding.
If you have no courses in teaching in higher education, you are expected to complete relevant courses, offered at Chalmers, within two years of commencing your appointment.
The following qualifications are meritorious:
- Experience in course development and the management of educational programs.
- Experience in teaching advanced courses in numerical analysis or partial differential equations.
Good verbal and written communication skills in English are required. The teaching language at the undergraduate level is typically Swedish, and at the master's level, it is English. If needed, Chalmers offers Swedish language courses, with the aim that you will be able to teach in Swedish within two years of the start of your appointment.
When assessing qualifications and experience, consideration will be given to parental leave, sick leave, or similar circumstances. The reasons and extent should be specified in connection with the presentation of qualifications and experience.
The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level and qualifications for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Senior lecturer chapter 7.2 and Associate professor at chapter 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.
External applicants who currently do not meet the full pedagogical requirements may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first three years of employment.
Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
