Assistant Professor of Statistics
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Summary: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado Mesa University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Statistics. Colorado Mesa University is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution with a B.S. program in Mathematics with separate concentrations in Statistics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Secondary Education.
For this position, we seek a highly motivated, teaching-centered colleague who will actively engage with students. Applicants must have an academic background in statistics and should be proficient in R. Applicants should demonstrate effective pedagogical strategies in the classroom and have the ability to teach undergraduate introductory statistics courses as well as upper division courses such as Computational Statistics; Correlation and Regression; Design and Analysis of Experiments; and Categorical Data Analysis. Additional course offerings include Mathematical Statistics I & II, Sampling Techniques, and Time Series.
The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester; courses may be assigned as in-person, online, hybrid, or via distance delivery modalities. Scholarship in the discipline, involvement with advising, and service to the department and profession are expected.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate-level statistics courses.
Engage in scholarly activity in statistics or statistics education.
Serve as a mentor for undergraduate student research projects and activities.
Provide student academic advising and evaluation.
Participate in professional development activities.
Engage in service to the department, university, and profession.
Perform other program and department-level duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Statistics, Statistics Education, or Mathematics. Degree should be completed by August 2024; candidates who will complete their degree after August 2024 may be considered.
An academic background in statistics, as demonstrated by dissertation topic or current scholarly activities.
Experience teaching undergraduate statistics or mathematics courses.
Interest and ability to teach lower-division introductory statistics courses.
Demonstrated commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching.
Effective communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience taking actuarial exams is valued.
Preference will be given to candidates with excellent communication skills, a record of outstanding teaching at the college level, and the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses.
Evidence of dedication to scholarship, particularly in the mentoring of undergraduate projects, and a demonstrated commitment to service activities will help to further distinguish the applicant.
