Position Description

Colby College – Assistant Professor in Mathematics (Tenure Track) We have a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning September 1, 2024. The Department of Mathematics seeks an exceptional and creative teacher with an established and active research program.

Our target candidate will have research experience and trajectory that position them to have a broad expertise and sustained interest in stochastic processes and/or differential equations. Preference will be given to candidates with research expertise in both areas, and especially those who pursue theoretical as well as applied projects, including projects that are suitable for undergraduate research experiences.

Candidates must have already received a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, and should have completed at least one year of either a full-time teaching position in mathematics or a research-oriented postdoctoral position in mathematics with a significant teaching component, in the USA or Canada. Applications must be able to demonstrate a strong research trajectory, an exemplary teaching record, and a commitment to mentoring undergraduates.

The successful candidate will share the responsibility for teaching sections of our 300-level and 400-level courses in differential equations and probability, along with calculus, and preference will be given to the candidates who have demonstrated a successful track record of teaching such courses. Other teaching assignments may include courses at the 200-level, as well as occasional advanced elective or seminar courses designed by the candidate. The teaching responsibility will be an average of 4.5 courses per year, which commonly amounts to three 2-course terms and one 3-course term in each 2-year cycle. We aim to hire a mathematician whose interests complement and interface with those of our continuing mathematics faculty, serve the needs of the curriculum, and contribute to the emerging College initiatives. To apply, please provide all of the following: ● cover letter, which addresses your specific reasons for seeking a position at Colby, which is a liberal arts institution, and your commitment to promoting diversity in the discipline of mathematics; ● CV; ● two-page statement on teaching, describing practical pedagogical strategies and concrete experiences of their implementation in introductory courses; ● official summary evaluation sheets from all of the courses taught during the past three (3) academic years; ● concise statement specifically aimed at Colby mathematicians outlining your research program; ● at least four (4) letters of recommendation submitted directly by the recommenders, at least two (2) of which should focus on the particulars of your teaching and mentoring experience, and at least two (2) – on your research activities.

All materials should be submitted online at www.mathjobs.org. Review of complete applications will begin on February 18, 2024. Some late applications may be considered in extraordinary circumstances. Candidates who are selected for the short list will be asked to participate in a Zoom interview in March. The finalists will be invited to campus for on-site interviews, and we expect to be able to extend an offer to a successful candidate before the end of April.
