Position Announcement: Visiting Assistant Professor in Data Science

Gettysburg College invites applications for a full-time faculty position as Visiting Assistant Professor in Data Science beginning with the Fall 2024 semester. This is a full-time, term appointment for one academic year. The successful applicant will have the chance to help shape the recently formed interdisciplinary Data Science minor at the college and participate in the development of a major in the discipline. Applicants can learn more about Gettysburg’s Data Science program at https://www.gettysburg.edu/academic-programs/interdisciplinary-studies/programs/data-science/.

This position will teach six courses during the academic year. The core teaching responsibilities will be a two-course sequence (DS 256 and DS 325) in Python programming for Data Science, aimed at students with diverse academic backgrounds. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the person hired, the teaching assignment might also include elective courses in related areas such as statistics, machine learning, cultural analytics, or data ethics. Candidates must have completed their PhD by August 2024. We welcome applications from candidates whose background is in any field, with preference for those with formal coursework and/or teaching experience in data science, machine learning, and quantitative analytic methods.

It is essential that candidates demonstrate potential as an excellent and innovative teacher, with an interest in working with students both inside and outside the classroom in a liberal arts environment. In addition, we are looking for candidates who can and will promote a learning environment in which underrepresented students will thrive. While there are no active research expectations associated with this position, the college values and encourages scholarship, and provides funding to support scholarly activities. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to engage students in research projects outside the classroom.

Gettysburg College is committed to creating and sustaining an inclusive environment that welcomes, supports, and respects all of its members, from all backgrounds and experiences. Each and every member is critical to developing a community that values the diversity of experiences including but not limited to race, religion, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, and place of origin. The faculty and staff work to connect with and support each member of our community and expect all others to do the same in developing an environment that is free from harassment, exploitation, intimidation, and discrimination. We particularly invite applications from members of any group that has been historically underrepresented in the American academy.

Please submit a cover letter with your application that briefly describes the aspects of this position that you find attractive and some specific ways that you hope to contribute to our data science program. In particular, please explicitly address the areas of data science that you would be most comfortable teaching as well as any experiences you have had working with diverse populations. In addition, please submit a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation, at least one of which explicitly addresses teaching effectiveness to https://gettysburg.peopleadmin.com/postings/5332. Review of applications will begin March 29, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries can be addressed to William O’Hara at wohara@gettysburg.edu.
