Application Deadline: none (posted 2024/04/19)
Position Description:

The Schiller Institute and Computer Science department at Boston College invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the intersection of climate modeling, health and machine learning.

Research on the link between climate change and mental health is a new, but growing field. Recent studies have linked suicide and temperature in Japan, PTSD and increases in suicide ideation following Hurricane Katrina, and ambient temperature and extreme weather events, mediated by access to drinking water, are associated with increases in homicide. There is a need for climate scientists, mental health experts, and data scientists to work together to link population-based mental health data to climate data for association and causal inference studies. We seek a postdoctoral fellow who will work under the supervision of Professors Yi Ming and George Mohler to develop new multiscale causal inference and machine learning methods for understanding the connection between global climate and local human health.

The candidate will be expected to publish in climate science journals, public health journals, statistics journals and/or machine learning conference proceedings. The candidate may also be invited to supervise research projects led by undergraduates or graduate students. Teaching is not required unless requested by the candidate.

Starting Date The position begins immediately upon the availability of the candidate. The position will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

Qualifications The candidate should have a Ph.D. in a physical, mathematical, or computer science with experience in climate modeling, causal inference, or deep learning with spatial and time series data. Candidates should also be proficient in programming in Python, R and/or Matlab.

How to Apply Please submit the required materials to yi.ming@bc.edu and mohlerg@bc.edu . The email should contain the words "Postdoc" and the candidate's "Name" in the subject line.

Required Materials: Cover letter describing the candidate’s research interest and suitability for the position Curriculum vitae Contact information of two references Compensation includes a competitive salary with additional funds for travel and research support, and a complete benefits plan.
