Position Description

The research group of Haizhao Yang at the University of Maryland College Park has one or more Post-Doctoral positions available. The selected candidates will contribute significantly to a focused research program in Artificial Intelligence (AI), statistics, and Mathematics. The goal of the project is to establish the theoretical and algorithmic foundation of interpretable reinforcement learning for intelligent computation and modeling. The project combines Bayesian optimal experimental design, manifold learning, symbolic learning, and reinforcement learning for the automatic design of optimal algorithms for scientific computing.

The positions are immediately available and will remain open until filled.

Key Responsibilities: • Conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI, statistics, and mathematics. • Implement reinforcement learning algorithms to solve challenging scientific computing problems. • Establish the connection of human-designed and machine-learned algorithms and characterize the optimality. • Develop the theoretical foundation of reinforcement learning for optimal algorithm design. • Collaborate with other team members to advance the research program’s objectives. • Publish research findings in top-tier scientific journals and conference proceedings. • Contribute to the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the research program and reporting activities. • 1+1 teaching load per year.

Qualifications and terms of appointment: • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field by the start date of the appointment. • Strong background in machine learning, optimization, and statistical learning. • Appointment starts at a mutually agreeable date • One-year appointment, renewable annually, for a maximum duration of three years, based on performance
