The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for one full-time teaching stream appointment in Mathematics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Mathematics by the time of the appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellent teaching.

We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths, with intellectual curiosity to pursue novel and innovative methods of thinking and teaching, and an interest in establishing a long-term teaching career in the Department. Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application, with required materials outlined below. Successful candidates must have strong letters of reference from referees of high standing highlighting both excellent teaching and evidence of commitment to pedagogical enquiry and teaching innovation.

Teaching duties in the undergraduate program may include core courses at the first and/or second year level, as well as upper-level courses, in one of the candidate's fields of expertise. Responsibilities may include undergraduate teaching, managing teaching assistants, developing course materials, and curriculum development. In addition, each faculty member may have some responsibility for student recruitment and departmental administration.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

At UTM we are committed to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. With an enviable diverse student body, we especially welcome applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous, Black, or racially visible (persons of colour), and who have experience working with teaching or mentoring diverse groups or students. Candidates must demonstrate, in their application materials, an ability to foster diversity on campus and within the curriculum or discipline, and must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial environment. Candidates must submit a statement describing their contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities; efforts undertaken to develop inclusive pedagogies, collaboration, and engagement with underrepresented communities; and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups. If you have questions about this statement, please contact Professor Ilia Binder at ilia.binder@utoronto.ca.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply through MathJobs. Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement describing contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion (as outlined above), a statement of career goals and a complete teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations.

Applicants must arrange to have at least three recent letters of recommendation (on letterhead, dated and signed), uploaded through MathJobs directly by the writers by the closing date. At least one reference letter must speak to the candidate’s teaching and commitment to pedagogical enquiry and teaching innovation. For enquiries, please contact Ossian MacEachern, Chair’s Assistant, at o.maceachern@utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by October 28, 2024.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
