Department Summary:
The mission of the Mathematics Department is to: 1) educate students about mathematics and statistics as critical branches of human thought; 2) help students recognize and appreciate the beauty and scope of the mathematical sciences; 3) prepare students for graduate work in mathematics and statistics; 4) meet the needs of students in fields that use mathematics and statistics; and 5) equip students with the knowledge required for careers in government, industry, and education. The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with optional concentrations in pure mathematics and statistics, as well as Master of Science and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees in mathematics. We also offer minors in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science. The Mathematics Department is located in the modern $100M Dana Mohler-Faria Center for Science and Mathematics, offering a wide variety of courses to its approximately 150 majors and the broader student population. The College of Science and Math has recently launched innovative programs in Cybersecurity and Photonics, and we are excited to design new Data Science offerings in the near future.
Bridgewater State University, located in the geographic heart of Southeastern Massachusetts, has served the region since 1840. The 270-acre campus is well within an hour’s drive of Boston, Providence, and Cape Cod, and is home to its own MBTA station. Today, the institution provides more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs through its five colleges to approximately 10,000 students.
Bridgewater State University was awarded a 5-year NSF Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) grant, which supports alliances among institutions of higher education to design and implement strategies that increase the number of historically underrepresented STEM faculty and promote systemic change. The grant provides a number of benefits to participating faculty, including course reduction and funding for establishing a research agenda, travel support, and cohort activities across the three institutions.

Essential Duties:
The Department of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University is accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. We are specifically focused on hiring a data scientist or statistician who is passionate about teaching and is dedicated to working with undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants should be prepared to teach 12 contact hours each semester ranging from non-major to upper-level and graduate courses in statistics, data science, and related topics. Additionally, the successful candidate will develop a program of continuing scholarship in which the inclusion of students is encouraged. They will also advise students and participate in departmental and university service activities.
Required Qualifications:
A PhD in Statistics, Data Science, or Mathematics by August 31, 2025 is required. The successful candidate will have completed significant data science or statistics coursework at the graduate level.
Successful candidates will be strongly invested in excellence in teaching, advising, service, and research, and will demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical and statistical techniques in a variety of contexts, including other academic disciplines. They will also have the ability to communicate effectively, employ technology in teaching and learning, and work in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity. Evidence of scholarly activity, teaching experience, and a commitment to public higher education are expected as well.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with software such as R, Python, SQL, and visualization tools to enhance BSU’s data science offerings. Candidates eager to become involved in data science activities within the department are especially encouraged to apply.
