The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Geodesy / Institute of Statistics at Graz University of Technology has an open position: Professorship for Foundations of Data Science - Application deadline: 05.01.2025 - Employment Start: October 2026 - Employment Type: Permanent - Degree of Employment: full-time TU Graz is looking for a researcher with international reputation and an excellent track record in a modern area of data science. The new professorship should complement existing expertise at TU Graz and within NAWI Graz, and further expand the interdisciplinary cooperation between the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU Graz. The applicant's research program should aim to theoretically explore data analytic methods, machine learning or artificial intelligence with the help of mathematical and statistical models and procedures; a connection to Bayesian methods is particularly desirable. The professorship plays a central role in the newly established Master's degree program in Data Science. The successful candidate is involved in the development and realisation of advanced courses, as well as in the supervision of scientific work and projects within the framework of this program. Experience and willingness to supervise industry-related projects is particularly welcome. The area of responsibility also includes teaching courses in basic subjects of the degree program, especially in the field of Bayesian statistics. The establishment of an own research group, along with the necessary acquisition of third-party funds, is expected. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to take on tasks in academic self-administration. The professorship will be part of the Institute of Statistics. The current research groups at the Institute work in the fields of Applied Statistics, Probability Theory and Financial and Actuarial Mathematics. The institute is one of five institutes in the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Geodesy. The advertised professorship is embedded in the Field of Expertise “Information, Communication and Computing” at TU Graz, which consists of working groups in Mathematics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, among others. Applicants with links to research projects within the FoE will be given special consideration. Employment Requirements - A university doctorate in the field (PhD). - Outstanding scientific qualifications in the field for both research and teaching, as evidenced by habilitation (venia docendi) or equivalent scientific achievements. - Didactic skills, as shown by habilitation or compareable qualifications for adequate teaching at Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral level. - International experience in the field. - The ability to lead a research team. Selection Criteria - Experience in the acquisition of third-party funded projects and/or industry projects. - Competences in Gender & Diversity.
