Position Description

Position: DIRECTOR OF EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION Location: Providence Rhode Island

The American Mathematical Society invites applications for the Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. As the Society’s senior diversity officer, the director is charged with leading the development and implementation of strategies that aid the organization in fulfilling its commitments in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the broader mathematical community and within the organization. As such, the director will work collaboratively with multiple groups to achieve equitable outcomes and champion all mathematicians. We hope to identify a candidate who can begin work by February 28, 2025. Society The American Mathematical Society is the leading association of professional mathematicians focused on mathematical research and scholarship. For more than 100 years, it has served the national and international mathematical community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. Founded in 1888, the AMS serves nearly 30,000 members worldwide with offices in Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. It is a premier publisher of mathematical literature, as it produces high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and sought-after books, and is also the producer of the Mathematical Reviews database, MathSciNet. AMS publications are routinely used in research or as primary and supplemental textbooks in undergraduate and graduate courses. It values the contributions of all members of the mathematics community to improve mathematics research, education, and the standing of the mathematical sciences. The Society welcomes everyone interested in mathematics as it works to build a community that is diverse, respectful, accessible, and inclusive. Duties

The director must work collaboratively with groups, departments, offices, and organizations internal and external to the AMS to achieve more equitable outcomes. The director must have the demonstrated skills to examine and reform policies and programs to champion all mathematicians, develop and implement strategies that help foster a sense of belonging among all mathematicians, and create a more inclusive mathematics community.

The director will lead a team focused on EDI efforts. The position will be based in Providence with an opportunity to work remotely one day per week.

Desired Qualifications

The successful candidate will have experience working in a complex organization and proven ability in operationalizing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who additionally have as many as possible of the following: • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and to advancing these values in professional practice. • Significant leadership and administrative experience in the areas of diversity, equity, and/or inclusion. • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team, including hiring, mentoring, and supporting professional development within an equity, diversity, and inclusion-focused context. • Demonstrated experience supporting, developing, and/or leading programs that help historically-excluded and/or underrepresented groups succeed. • Demonstrated experience shifting policies, practices, and programs to address inequities, reduce barriers, and bolster inclusivity and/or participation among diverse groups. • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and personal growth in the many facets of equity, diversity, and inclusion, especially within a mathematical or other scientific environment. • Familiarity with using data to support equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts over time. • Familiarity with careers and PhD programs in the mathematical sciences. • A doctoral degree in the mathematical sciences or a closely related field.
