Position Description
Call for Expressions of Interest
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy) invites expressions of interest for academic positions at the Associate and/or Full Professor level. Opportunities are available in any field of Mathematics and will be pursued through a "direct call" procedure.
The Direct Calls program of the Italian Ministry of Research (MUR) offers funding for academic positions to scientists and scholars who meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
- Hold an equivalent academic position abroad for at least three years.
- Are recipients of prestigious grants, such as those funded by the European Research Council (ERC) or the Italian Ministry of Research, including ERC grants.
Since this initiative covers the period 2023–2026, applications are welcome from candidates who currently do not meet the eligibility requirements but will do so before the end of 2026.
Early Career Opportunities
The Department is also interested in early career scholars and encourages expressions of interest for tenure-track Researcher (Italian RTD-B/RTT) positions.
Expectations for Successful Candidates
Selected candidates will:
- Contribute actively to the Department's academic programs, strategy, and governance.
- Provide scientific leadership.
- Apply for national and international research funding.

Eligibility Criteria for Direct Calls
The Direct Calls program provides opportunities for scholars meeting one of the following conditions:
- Scholars with international experience: At least three years in a permanent teaching or research position at a foreign university or research institution, holding an equivalent academic position to the one applied for through the direct call (Art. 1 c.9 L. n. 230/2005).
- Previous experience in Italian academia: At least three years of teaching or research in Italian universities through a direct call authorized by the Ministry of Research (Art. 1 c.9 L. 230/2005).
- Grant recipients: Winners of excellence grants (e.g., ERC grants) funded by the European Research Council or the Italian Ministry of Research, provided the grant duration was at least three years and concluded no more than three years ago (Art. 29 c.7 L. n. 240/2010, Art. 7 c.2 D.M. n. 635/2016).
Selection Process
A Selection Committee, including international experts, will review applications. Successful candidates will be notified promptly to initiate the administrative and bureaucratic steps required to finalize their appointment.
The direct call recruitment process requires several approvals, including endorsement by the Ministry of Research. The hiring process is expected to be completed, and the position filled, within approximately one year from the Department's decision.
