Position Description

Position: CHIEF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT OFFICER (CSAO) Location: Providence Rhode Island

The American Mathematical Society invites applications for the role of Chief Scientific Advancement Officer (CSAO). Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Scientific Advancement Officer (CSAO) is responsible for programs and initiatives of the American Mathematical Society that enhance the mathematics community as well as the professional lives of individual mathematicians. The CSAO leads the Division of Scientific Advancement comprised of three mission-centered units: the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; the Office of Government Relations; and the Office of Programs and Professional Services. The work of the division supports and champions mathematicians, mathematics programs, mathematics education, and research in the mathematical sciences. The CSAO has responsibility for establishing a clear vision for the work of the division and its alignment with the strategic priorities of the AMS. The CSAO will be engaged in the crafting of grant proposals that support new and continuing efforts of the Society; they will partner with colleagues in other professional societies to support mathematics; and they will be a voice within the mathematics community that advocates for creating an even more welcoming and supportive community.

We hope to identify a candidate who can begin work on or before July 1, 2025.

The American Mathematical Society is the leading association of professional mathematicians focused on mathematical research and scholarship. For more than 100 years, it has served the national and international mathematical community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. Founded in 1888, the AMS serves nearly 30,000 members worldwide with offices in Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. It is a premier publisher of mathematical literature, as it produces high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and sought-after books, and is also the producer of the Mathematical Reviews database, MathSciNet. The American Mathematical Society is committed to upholding the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Society recognizes the breadth of people, thought, and experience that contribute to mathematics. It values the contributions of all members of the mathematics community to improve mathematics research, education, and the standing of the mathematical sciences.

The position will be based in Providence with the possibility of limited, episodic remote-work options.

The CSAO must hold a doctorate in the mathematical sciences, or a closely related field, and have administrative experience that prepares them for a senior role at the AMS. They will have excellent communication skills, managerial experience, and experience shepherding complex, externally funded projects. They must have experience and demonstrated stature as a professional mathematician in academic, industrial, or governmental employment.

In addition, we have a preference for candidates who have: direct experience with the areas contained in the Division of Scientific Advancement; experience preparing major funding proposals; demonstrated ability to sustain teamwork and partnerships with employees, stakeholders, and peers; successfully managed and mentored individuals for their professional advancement; and the ability to work on multiple projects and set priorities for themselves and others.

Applications: This search is chaired by John Meier, CEO of the AMS. Nominations of qualified candidates can be sent via e-mail to: ceo@ams.org. All such communication will be held in confidence. Applicants should submit a CV and a letter of interest on the AMS website or Math Jobs Link. The letter should be at most 2 pages, explaining your interest in being the AMS’s Chief Scientific Advancement Officer and why you consider yourself to be a compelling candidate. Finalists will be required to submit names of references.

Applicants can also submit CV and cover letter directly to txs@ams.org for review.

Applications received by February 3, 2025 will receive full consideration. The American Mathematical Society is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
