Tenure-track Assistant Professor- Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences University of Nebraska at Omaha The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a focus on mathematics education at the K-12 level. UNO is both a regional and national leader in the field of STEM education, and, in particular with mathematics education, as STEM education has been a campus priority since 2013. The recently opened STEM TRAIL Center is an example of this priority. The center helps with grants, faculty-led and student-led research, outreach, and engagement related to STEM education. The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is looking to build on this campus priority. The primary responsibilities for this position are teaching mathematics courses that focus on both pre-service and in-service K-12 teachers, research in K-12 mathematics education, and outreach within the community. This position addresses the growing need for elementary and secondary teachers who are highly qualified in their understanding of mathematics and mathematics knowledge for teaching. In alignment with the university’s mission and values around STEM education, candidates with experience using active learning methods are particularly encouraged to apply. The candidate will work closely with faculty in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences’ Teacher Education Department on a variety of initiatives. Applications open starting in October 2024 for an August 2025 start date. Position Summary: The primary responsibility will be to teach mathematics courses that support both pre-service and in-service K-12 teachers such as Mathematics for Elementary Teachers. Essential functions include: • Maintain an active and productive research program in mathematics education; • Effectively teach a 3/3 load (9 hours per semester) of courses primarily focused on mathematics content for future elementary, middle-school, and high-school teachers; • Pursue internal and external funding in support of mathematics education initiatives; and • Lead community engagement outreach efforts, including the High School Math Contest and other, similar outreach events. Required Qualifications: The successful applicant will hold a doctoral degree in Mathematics Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field, as well as a Masters in Mathematics (or equivalent); will show evidence of effectiveness in teaching; will show evidence of a productive research program; and will show evidence of experience collaborating with K-12 partners. Preferred Qualifications: The successful applicant may show evidence of the ability to secure external funding. The candidate may show evidence of successful K-12 teaching experience. The candidate may show evidence of effective people skills, leadership potential, mentoring, as well as effectiveness at curriculum development. The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is one of the largest departments at UNO, both in the number of faculty and the diversity of mission. Faculty collaborate with the STEM TRAIL Center, the Service Learning Academy, and the STEM Ecosystem as well as with local non-profits and organizations to provide outreach to the community. The department is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, the oldest and largest college at UNO.
