Position Description
The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) seeks to fill an instructor position with an anticipated start date of August 18, 2025. This position will play an important role in advancing the department’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for students in calculus classes. This position's main responsibilities are to teach calculus and regularly engage with an effective instructional team to increase student achievement. The ideal faculty member will have experience in working with students in an urban setting and facilitating an active learning classroom. Required Qualifications: A graduate degree in mathematics (MA, MS, or PhD with completion by August 2025) or a graduate degree in a related field plus 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics completed by August 2025 (i.e. courses that count towards an MS or MA in Mathematics); and a record of teaching excellence in calculus. Preferred qualifications include experience in curriculum development in teaching calculus; experience in working with a team in coordinated instruction of a course; experience with students in an urban setting; and familiarity with the AP Calculus curriculum. Essential functions may include but are not limited to: teaching 22-26 credit hours per academic year of undergraduate courses in Mathematics with a primary focus on calculus instruction; actively serving on department/university committees; participating in institutional meetings; assisting with the development of curriculum; and other duties as assigned by the Chair. Many students enter UNO with aspirations of becoming data scientists, engineers, computer scientists, or with the intent to pursue one of the many other career options afforded by a degree in a STEM field. Calculus 1 has historically served as a “gatekeeper” for these fields, in that almost all of these students will be required to take and pass the course to progress towards their STEM degree. To enhance the success rate of students in calculus at UNO, we have begun to institute policies and programs that have been determined to be successful elsewhere and which are in keeping with the MAA’s findings regarding positive calculus interventions and instruction. Approaches that have yielded significant improvement at UNO and other institutions are coordination of calculus across all the instructional sections, and the offering of structured student support outside of the classroom. This has been extremely beneficial at UNO, as the extra support that is now available for calculus students is always focused on the same content. The ideal candidate will be actively engaged in the student support framework. In addition, they will be expected to become a vibrant team-member of the calculus instructional group and engage with faculty in the group. Why UNO? The University and the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences have a strong commitment to diversity in its varied forms and to fostering an inclusive and welcoming learning environment where students, faculty and staff thrive and succeed. With a metropolitan mission, UNO serves a diverse student body with many first-generation college students and is also actively engaged with the community in myriad ways. UNO transforms and improves the quality of life locally, nationally, and globally. The University and the College of Arts & Sciences have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. The University of Nebraska does not discriminate based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and/or political affiliation in its programs, activities, or employment. UNO is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an E-Verify employer. Apply online at https://unomaha.peopleadmin.com/postings/22572. All applicants should upload a cover letter (discussing interest in the program), a curriculum vitae (including contact information for three references that can attest to your teaching experience and performance), an unofficial transcript, and a one-page teaching statement. The teaching statement should describe your philosophy of teaching math with an emphasis on calculus; thoughts and experiences on engagement in an urban setting; and ideas regarding participation with an instructional team to improve curriculum and instruction for students. February 1, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. We are not accepting applications for this job through MathJobs.Org right now.
