Multiphysics, Machine Learning, and Uncertainty Quantification Postdoctoral Positions Los Alamos National Laboratory Los Alamos, New Mexico Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. Our Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified Postdoctoral Research Associates. You will complete research projects on various potential topics, including hybrid simulations coupling machine learning with numerical methods, multiscale discretization, nonlocal closure modeling, structure preservation, multilevel and multifidelity machine learning architectures and training algorithms, uncertainty quantification, high-dimensional stochastic systems and high-dimensional partial differential equation systems. Multiple positions available. About the T-5 Group The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasmas, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods and machine learning. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that is working on problems of strategic national importance involving simulating high-dimensional, complex, multiscale phenomena. Qualifications: • A PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering or computational sciences completed within the past 5 years (or soon to be completed) • Experience in numerical analysis and physics simulations OR designing, implementing and training machine learning models OR probabilistic reasoning and uncertainty quantification • Experience in conducting original research as demonstrated through peer reviewed publications • Creative problem-solving skills and ability and willingness to engage in new fields of research Desired Qualifications: • Expertise in multiscale discretization (variational multiscale, multiscale finite elements, etc.), structure preserving numerical methods, stochastic optimization, analysis of machine learning methodologies, multilevel methods, scale-bridging and closure modeling and/or high performance computing environments (MPI, CUDA) • Expertise in software development and computing tools (C/C++, python, git, parallel computing, etc.) • Experience with deep learning and tensor libraries such as PyTorch We Are Delivering Scientific Excellence Los Alamos National Laboratory is more than a place to work.
