Position Description
The Geomathematics and Geoinformatics Group at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is offering the following position (to be filled at the earliest convenience):PhD Student (3 years)
within the DFG project
Reconstruction Methods in Micromagnetic Tomography
TU Bergakademie Freiberg is a university with a strong profile in geo, environmental, energy, and material sciences. In this environment, we are a strongly mathematically oriented research group with a focus on the analysis of various problems in geophysics (in particular, geomagnetism) and the development of corresponding numerical methods. We offer the opportunity to work in a small interdisciplinary research group consisting of mathematicians, computer (geo)scientists, and geophysicists.
The topic:
The announced project aims at the development, analysis, and application of new reconstructions methods for an inverse magnetization problem in micromagnetic tomography. That is, the combination of scanning magnetic microscopy and microCT in order to characterize magnetic properties of rock samples at grain size level. The successful candidate is expected to work on an approximate inverse-type approach to the problem and on the construction of suitable (spatiospectral) approximation methods. We are seeking a candidate interested both in thorough mathematical analysis as well as concrete geophysical applications.
What we offer:
- strong interdisciplinary research at the intersection of mathematics and geophysics
- possibility for collaboration with the Paleomagnetic Laboratory at Utrecht University, NL
- personal and family friendly work environment
- culture-rich cities like Dresden and outdoor opportunities like Saxon Switzerland nearby
Your profile:
- strong master’s degree in (applied) mathematics or related fields
- at least basic programming skills, such as Matlab/Python
- good communication skills and interest in interdisciplinary research/geophysical applications
- good English skills, German skills are an advantage but not mandatory
Inquiries and applications (including cover letter, transcripts of records, certificates) can be addressed to Prof. Christian Gerhards (christian.gerhards@geophysik.tu-freiberg.de; group homepage). Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
We are not accepting applications for this job through MathJobs.Org right now. Please see the job description above on how to apply.
