The University of Warsaw (UW), founded in 1816, is the largest university in Poland. It has over 36 000 students and almost 2 000 PhD students; 4 000 academic and 3 600 other staff; 25 faculties and 4 doctoral schools located on 3 campuses.
Since 2018 UW is a member of the 4EU+ Alliance, together with Charles University in Prague, Universität Heidelberg, Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas, Sorbonne Université, University of Copenhagen, Università degli Studi di Milano, and Université de Genève.
Mathematics has been present at UW since the very founding of the University. A separate Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics (MIM) was established in 1969. As of now, its faculty consists of 253 employees (incl. 47 full professors), divided among three institutes: Institute of Mathematics, Institute of Informatics, and Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics MIM has over 1 250 students in four fields of study: mathematics, computer science, bioinformatics, and machine learning.
