National Math Camps

Position Description
Description
Are you passionate about math, excited to mentor young students, and eager to create a supportive and fun camp environment? National Math Camps is looking for enthusiastic counselors to join our summer math camps for mathematically talented middle school students in Summer 2025. As a counselor, you’ll play a vital role as a leader, mentor, and role model, helping to create an inclusive and inspiring camp experience where students can discover the joy and challenge of mathematics within a supportive community.
Counselors will receive pedagogical training and mentorship from faculty, giving you hands-on experience in fostering engaging and collaborative learning environments. This is a unique opportunity to inspire young mathematicians, develop your leadership skills, and be part of a vibrant camp community.
Our camps will be held at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA, and Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC, with each camp hosting two 2-week sessions. Counselors will work both sessions at their assigned camp and participate in onsite pre-camp training. Applicants must have graduated high school and be at least 18 years old by the start of camp. College graduates or those entering their final year of college may also qualify for our Senior Counselor position.
What You'll Do
- Supervise campers: Ensure campers’ safety and well-being during all camp activities, including meals, classes, and recreational periods.
- Mentor campers: Lead a small group of 5–10 students, offering regular check-ins, guidance, and support to help them navigate camp life.
- Plan and lead activities: Create and run engaging extracurricular activities, like board games, karaoke, soccer, ultimate frisbee, or something uniquely tied to your interests!
- Support math learning: Serve as a Learning Assistant in math classes, helping to create an engaging and supportive environment. Work with small groups or individual students, encouraging exploration and modeling how to embrace challenges as a natural and rewarding part of learning.
- Foster community: Build meaningful relationships with campers and contribute to a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful camp culture.
- Assist with events: Help plan and run all-camp events like talent shows, team competitions, or field trips.
- Document camper progress: Regularly record observations about campers in your counselor group, classes, and activities.
What We're Looking For
- You'll be at least 18 years old and have graduated high school by the camp’s start date.
- You’re comfortable with proof-based mathematics, and ideally have some experience with discrete mathematics.
- You love math and care deeply about teaching and inspiring others. You’re excited to share your enthusiasm, learn alongside our campers, and help them experience those magical “aha!” moments.
- You’ve worked with kids in some capacity (even informal roles like babysitting count).
- You are responsible, flexible, and proactive. You take initiative, work well with others, and can be trusted to help create a smooth and successful camp experience.
- You have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to create connections and foster a welcoming environment.
- You have interests and hobbies outside of math that you’re excited to share with our campers.
- Previous experience with summer math camps, math circles, or other math enrichment programs is a plus, but is not required.
- Previous experience as a learning assistant, teaching assistant, or tutor is a plus, but is not required.
