Position Description:

Summary of Job Duties: The Department of Mathematics at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (UAFS) seeks applications for the Department Head to be appointed at the rank of Associate/Full Professor of Mathematics. The position will start July 1, 2025. The Department offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Teacher Licensure, and minors in Mathematics and Statistics. In addition, the Department plays a significant role in supporting curricula across the institution. The Department Head is responsible for administrative and academic roles within the Department. The Department Head will serve as the primary administrator and leader for the academic unit and report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Experience in teaching, research, service, and administration at a 4‐year institution is preferred. The incumbent will teach a 15-credit hour course load during the 12-month contract year. Administrative duties include managing full-time and part-time faculty, mathematics program development and growth, program evaluation and assessment, and collaboration across the university.

Preferred Educational and Work Experience:

Doctoral degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or statistics from an accredited institution Demonstrated experience in a leadership position for at least three years, supervising others and being a team leader. Five (5) or more years of teaching experience with effective use of technology in the classroom, developing instructional materials, and delivering distance learning. Experience working with first-generation and non-traditional learners. A teaching philosophy with an emphasis on critical thinking and accessibility is necessary.

Minimum Educational and Work Experience:

Doctoral degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or statistics from an accredited institution Three (3) or more years of teaching experience with effective use of technology in the classroom, developing instructional materials, and delivering distance learning. Experience in a leadership position at the university level, for example, as a committee chair or program director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:

Supervisory techniques and procedures Ability to effectively teach a wide range of entry-level general education mathematics courses, many to non-majors and first-generation students, and to model highly effective teaching Ability to teach a wide range of mathematics major courses and courses serving a variety of on-campus majors Demonstration of deep pedagogical knowledge of mathematics and connections among mathematical ideas Commitment to growth in all aspects as a faculty member, including teaching, scholarship, and service and fostering these attributes in the departmental faculty Ability to administer academic programs, including scheduling, evaluation, and budgeting Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to collaborate with faculty and administrators to achieve departmental, college, and university goals Attention to maintenance of facilities and technology, including mathematics-specific technology and university software systems Strong work ethic and time management Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks simultaneously

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Administrative:

Provide effective leadership and administration of the Department of Mathematics by facilitating the vision, mission, goals, objectives, and activities of the Department as consistent with those of the College and University Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating collaboratively to foster teamwork and collegiality and to provide academic leadership for the Department Facilitate the implementation and regular review of department-level bylaws Manage the Department’s fiscal year budget, faculty travel, purchases of Departmental materials, and other expenses Possess current knowledge and understanding of developments in mathematics and will be expected to engage in curricular planning and development, promote active research, and collaboratively lead initiatives to build the academic programs within the department Supervise and evaluate a departmental administrative assistant, typically 13 full-time departmental faculty members, and a few adjunct and concurrent instructors. Mentor these constituencies to develop and achieve high standards in teaching, student learning, assessment, service, and scholarly activity where appropriate Create semester course schedules and make appropriate adjustments to the course schedule based on program and student needs Conduct standard program assessments and reviews, complete annual faculty evaluations, carry out recruitment and retention duties focusing on retention of a diverse student population and quality faculty Maintain student and departmental records and communicate regularly and effectively with students, faculty, and other administrators Maintain consistent office hours/availability and strong work-ethic Facilitate regular department meetings with faculty and staff. Attend commencement ceremonies and other departmental, college, and university-level meetings and events as required Coordinate outreach, marketing, and fundraising to support departmental programs

Teaching:

Teach various mathematics courses in their area of expertise and others as needed. High-quality instruction in multiple modalities is preferred and may include in-person, hybrid, sync-online, full-online, 8-week, and 16-week classes. Demonstrate innovation in the classroom, including good use of technology Demonstrate a solid commitment to student success and mentoring students

Scholarship:

Participate in scholarly and research activities that may involve student researchers

Service:

Participate in service at the departmental, college, university, community, and professional levels Collaborate with other campus leaders in college and university administration, including meeting and working with other chairs/chairs to assist the Dean with College initiatives and goals Participate in accreditation activities at the program and institutional levels as needed Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Working Relationships: Works closely with administrators, faculty, students, and staff campus-wide. Contact with students and instructors from high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools for specially scheduled events is sometimes required.
