Position Description

The Instituto de Matemáticas (IM) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track research position in the field of probability, with a starting date between November and December 2025, in the México City branch of the Institute.

UNAM is México's leading university and is home to some of the most prominent research institutions in Latin America. The IM boasts over 90 full-time researchers spanning a wide range of mathematical disciplines. PROFILE OF THE CANDIDATES

The available position is in the area of probability; therefore, applicants are expected to demonstrate a solid background in this field and its specialties, and their research program should be relevant and contribute to the development of the area.

The person selected to fill the position is expected to:

- Conduct outstanding research in the area of probability, with a relevant research program and contribute to the development of the area within the IM.

- Teach probability courses to undergraduate and master’s-level students.

- Supervise undergraduate and graduate theses.

- Participate in research projects independently and/or in collaboration with research staff within and outside the Institute.

- Participate in outreach and/or engagement activities related to mathematics within and outside the IM.

- Participate in institutional activities of the IM.

- Be willing to respect institutional processes related to equality, non-discrimination, and a life free of violence within the IM.

REQUIREMENTS

Individuals who wish to be considered under this call must meet the following requirements:

- Hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field.

- Have a demonstrated record of outstanding research in probability.

- Have 2 years of postdoctoral (or equivalent) experience.

- Possess strong communication skills.

- Show commitment to teaching excellence.

- The position is part of the SIJA-DGAPA program, which aims to hire young academics. Therefore, the following age restrictions apply: At the time the position begins, women must be no older than 39 years of age, and men must be no older than 37 years of age.

DOCUMENTATION

The required documentation is as follows:

- A cover letter.

- A curriculum vitae that includes (if applicable):

* Research publications, categorized by editorial status (preprints, accepted, published);

* Teaching activities, including classes, courses, workshops, and thesis or dissertation supervision (separated by academic level);

* Outreach and/or engagement activities related to mathematics (including possible publications);

* Participation in conferences;

* Membership in academic networks;

* Participation in academic committees or bodies;

* Training and work related to equality;

* Any other academic information the applicant considers relevant.

- A short- and medium-term research plan.

- A statement of purpose, in free format, explaining why the applicant is interested in being part of the IM community.

- Three letters of recommendation, which must be sent independently by their authors. It is requested that, if possible, the recommendation letters include the following elements:

* A brief description of the academic ties and collaborations with the applicant (e.g., collaboration on research projects, thesis supervision, teaching, etc.);

* A description of the main skills and academic contributions identified in the applicant in the areas of scientific research and, where applicable, innovation and teaching within their field of knowledge;

* A description of the main ethical qualities and collaborative work skills in the scientific field observed in the applicant;

* Any additional relevant information about the applicant.
