Position Description

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield invites expressions of interest from outstanding researchers in all fields of Mathematics and Statistics who are seeking long-term externally funded research fellowships to support their transition to the next stage of their career.

The School offers a support package to all applicants selected to apply for external fellowships including grant-writing support and dedicated mentoring. For selected long-term fellowships schemes and subject to formal approval by the Faculty of Science, the School will also consider to augment its support by committing, at the point of application, to convert successfully secured fellowships into a proleptic permanent academic appointment.  Please see here for details of fellowships schemes relevant for the proleptic conversion scheme of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, including those offered by the EPSRC (Mathematical Sciences Open/Open Plus), ERC, and Royal Society (Dorothy Hodgkin/University Research Fellowships).

The School is host to three vibrant Research Clusters exploring the depth and breadth of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, and Mathematical and Statistical Modelling. Applicants are invited to e-mail the relevant Cluster Lead a 1-page expression of interest indicating
  1. the type of long-term fellowship they would like to apply to;
  2. how their research programme would enhance the activities in the School;
  3. the name of a proposed academic mentor within the relevant cluster.
They should also attach a short CV to their expressions of interest. The Cluster Leads contacts are:
General enquiries can be directed to the School Fellowships Lead, Prof Andrea Brini (a.brini@sheffield.ac.uk).

The School aspires to be an inclusive and welcoming environment for all who enjoy mathematics, and it has a strong research ethos and an international reputation in research. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 96% of our submission in Mathematics and Statistics was judged to be either internationally excellent or world leading.
