Position Description

The Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Forestry, and Technology invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) position in operator theory, complex analysis, and their applications to mathematical physics on the Joensuu Campus.

We are seeking a motivated Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) to join a PhD project focusing on the interplay between operator theory and complex analysis, and applications to mathematical physics. In this position, you will be working in the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, on the Joensuu campus.

As our new Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) you are expected to perform high-quality research and disseminate results through publications and presentations at conferences both in Finland and overseas. The main task of a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) is to conduct research for their dissertation and to complete postgraduate studies.

The Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) will join the Complex Analysis Research Group, which currently consists of three professors, one emeritus professor, four university lecturers, and several postdoctoral and doctoral researchers. The Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) may also benefit from the activities of the Theoretical Quantum Photonics Research Group. In addition, there will be opportunities to visit other research groups in the supervisor’s research network at New York University, UC Santa Cruz, University of Oxford, University of Reading, and University of Helsinki, which include several senior and early-career researchers with compatible research interests. The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities.

The personal performance salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment the total salary will be approximately EUR 2,585–2,720 /month.

Requirements: (i) master’s degree in mathematics; (ii) person to be appointed as a Doctoral Researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e., the Doctoral Researcher must be eligible to apply for and must have been granted the right to pursue postgraduate studies in the Faculty’s Doctoral Programme LUMETO; (iii) good knowledge of complex analysis and functional analysis as evidenced by transcripts; (iv) good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of quantum physics and probability will be considered an advantage.
