Position Description
Position DescriptionThe Department of Mathematics and the Data Science Program at Washington and Lee University invite applications for a joint tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Data Science starting July 1, 2026.
Washington and Lee University promotes a dynamic and welcoming environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in teaching and for vigorous scholarship. We welcome applications from candidates who would contribute to the University’s mission and Strategic Plan.
W&L is a small, prestigious liberal arts institution, where mathematics is one of the largest departments and data science is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary program. We are seeking an applicant who will contribute significantly to both areas and help expand our course offerings. The teaching load will be equally split between mathematics and data science over any given two-year period.
Our Data Science program draws faculty and courses from departments across the University, creating rich opportunities for collaboration. Central to our data science program is a commitment to ethical data practices and responsible AI. The program has grown rapidly since it was launched in 2020 and is now one of the largest and most academically diversified in the College. The ideal candidate will develop new innovative interdisciplinary courses, with an emphasis on modern pedagogy and inclusive excellence. Ideally, candidates will be able to bring their applied research interests into the classroom.
Almost all W&L students will take at least one mathematics course before they graduate, and we offer a variety of engaging courses at all levels that serve our student body. We mentor a large, active, and growingly diverse group of talented students; the number of mathematics majors is five times the national average for a school our size.
Our academic year is broken into two 12-week terms and a 4-week term. The teaching load is 5 courses per year with small class sizes of 15 – 25 students, and the university offers a generous sabbatical policy among many other benefits.Learn more about what makes Washington and Lee University a great place to work and live at jobs.wlu.edu.
