Position Description

AI is starting to influence mathematical research, from hypothesis generation to automated experimentation. Yet applications of AI to real problems remain rare. We are looking for mathematicians with strong AI skills to move this frontier forward.

In this postdoc you will work in a research group led by Elena Bunina, which focuses on exploring AI-assisted approaches to mathematical research. You'll have two options: - Join an existing project in combinatorial algebra with the Nebius Lab, Stevens Institute of Technology, OR - Propose your own research direction

Example project from the Nebius Lab in Stevens: The Andrews–Curtis conjecture (https://web.stevens.edu/algebraic/alexeim/Publications/AC%20Conjecture/ac1.pdf) concerns reducing balanced presentations of the trivial group to the trivial presentation using simple moves. While it is believed to be true, brute-force reduction may take tens of thousands of steps. We explore whether Reinforcement Learning can help.

Terms: - Gross monthly salary: 10,000 NIS (teaching possible for extra income) - Medical insurance - Conference travel support - 1-year contract, renewable (up to 3 years total) - Cloud compute provided by Nebius

Requirements: - PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science - For existing projects: willingness to work in a team - For own direction: ability to lead independent research and build collaborations
