Application Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University at Albany (State University of New York) seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in algebraic methods with potential applications to quantum computing or a related field, to begin in Fall 2026.

Successful applicants for this position must demonstrate a strong foundation in areas of algebra such as category theory, computational algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, algebraic statistics, or a related area. We are seeking a scholar with theoretical expertise in fundamental mathematics areas whose work bridges real-world applications related to quantum or neuromorphic computing. Examples of such applications include post-quantum cryptography, quantum information theory, and quantum complexity theory. We seek a colleague who will establish a dynamic research program that bridges advances in pure mathematics with real-world applications.

The position is expected to complement and extend current departmental strengths in data science, artificial intelligence, representation theory, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, and complexity theory. The successful hire will also be positioned to collaborate with university-wide initiatives such as the AI Plus Institute, as well as with colleagues in Physics and Nanoscale Science and Engineering, developing new interdisciplinary research directions.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in mathematics from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization, to be completed by August 15, 2026.
  • A record of research and scholarly activity in algebra, with potential applications to quantum computing or a related field, as demonstrated by publications in leading mathematics journals, preprints, books, or conference proceedings.
  • Evidence of the ability to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Evidence of the ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community.
  • Evidence of the ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience applying algebraic methods to quantum computing or a related field.
  • At least two years of postdoctoral experience in mathematics.
  • A record of innovation in algebraic methods, demonstrated by impactful publications or conference proceedings.
  • Evidence of potential for securing external research funding.
  • Experience in teaching and curriculum development at the collegiate level.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
Applicants MUST submit the following documents:
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Cover letter addressing all required minimum qualifications and any applicable preferred qualifications.
  • Research statement.
  • Teaching statement.
  • Contact information for three references.
