Position Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria is seeking candidates for nomination for a Postdoctoral Fellowship, starting July 1, 2026. The field of research is open, but priority will be given to candidates whose research area aligns with current faculty expertise. The Fellowship is for one year and is renewable, contingent on satisfactory progress, for an additional year. The Postdoctoral Fellowship is partially supported by PIMS, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences. The position is open to recent PhDs, or to graduate students who expect to receive a PhD by December 31, 2026. The Department has around 30 research faculty members covering many areas of mathematics and statistics. There are also around 70 graduate students split between PhD and Masters programs. Applications for the position should be made before November 15th 2025 on mathjobs.org and should include: (i) a CV; (ii) a research proposal; (iii) a cover letter naming a proposed research supervisor in the Department; (iv) three letters of reference, addressing the research potential of the applicant. Ideally one or more of these should come from outside the institution where the candidate studied/is studying for a Ph.D. This is a two-step process: candidate(s) for this position may be contacted in November by a potential research supervisor at the University of Victoria, and be invited to make a secondary application for consideration in the PIMS annual Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition. This secondary application is only available to candidates with the pre-approved support of a University of Victoria Faculty member.
