Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, Lecturer III (non-tenure track), Director of Lower Division Mathematics with a start date of August 10, 2026. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field by the appointment start date. As the Director of Lower Division Mathematics, the successful candidate will coordinate effort, resources, and strategies to develop and maintain a collaborative ecosystem with shared responsibility for improving student success in lower division mathematics.

Who We Want:

This leadership position—necessary to run an effective large-scale teaching operation with 10,000 students per year and about 100 courses each Fall and Spring—will require several important skills. The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher; have strong leadership, communication, and organization skills; understand what upper level STEM fields require of mathematics; and appreciate how mathematics develops critical thinking skills. In addition to teaching, key duties will include: alignment of course content, evaluation of lecturers and instructors, scheduling of lower division courses, promotion of collegial and effective collaboration, communication with key client departments (e.g. UNM’s College of Education and Human Sciences, and UNM’s Business Administration programs), and collaborating closely with department staff and UNM leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. by appointment date with specialization in mathematics or a related discipline 3+ years of experience as an instructor at the college level
