Position Description

Tenure-Track Position in Statistics or Data Science

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Victoria The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Statistics or Data Science, to commence July 1, 2026. We are particularly interested in early-career candidates whose research develops and applies innovative statistical, machine learning, or AI methods to solve complex problems in biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, or related areas. In accordance with the University’s equity plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference will be given to women. Candidates from this group who wish to qualify for preferential consideration must self-identify. A documented record of advancing the participation of underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences, and an articulated plan to continue such activities, will be considered an asset.

We strongly value the experiences and perspectives that a diverse faculty brings to the Department, and we actively encourage applications from women and members of other groups under-represented in the mathematical sciences. Diversity is a core value of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We are committed to building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, and equitable working and learning environment for all students, staff, and faculty. We strive for innovation in the classroom, along with creativity and leadership in research, with due attention to the needs of Canada’s most marginalized communities.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $115,000 - $137,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leave and pension plan.

The University of Victoria provides an excellent and active research environment. As a member of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), UVic offers exceptional opportunities for collaboration and postdoctoral support. The Department is very active in research areas including Bayesian statistics, biostatistics, mathematical statistics, optimal design of experiments, robust statistics, and statistical ecology. The successful candidate will find a supportive, diverse, and intellectually vibrant academic environment at the University of Victoria.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Statistics or Data Science. The candidate's research should demonstrate relevance to biostatistical applications broadly defined, which may include work in biomedical science, health data, or methodological advances supporting such fields. We welcome applicants with interdisciplinary interests, including those whose work involves machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational approaches applied in health or related contexts.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead collaborative research initiatives with UVic colleagues in disciplines such as Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Engineering, and Psychology, as well as with external partners such as the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and local health organizations. This position is critical to support graduate supervision, research innovation, and course development in both traditional biostatistics and modern data science, including new offerings in machine learning and AI, and to foster partnerships with the newly established Faculty of Health.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong record of research with potential for establishing an internationally recognized program, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and alignment with departmental research themes. The successful candidate will supervise graduate students and postdoctoral researchers and show excellence or promise in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. They will be expected to contribute to maintaining and enhancing the Department’s high standards of teaching and academic engagement.

Applications must be submitted through MathJobs.org. A complete application will include:

• A cover letter addressing interest and relevant experience

• A research statement

• A curriculum vitae

• A teaching dossier

Applicants should arrange for at least four letters of reference to be submitted to MathJobs; at least one should address teaching ability and mentorship. We welcome inquiries about the position, which may be directed to the Chair of the Department at chairms@uvic.ca. Review of applications will begin January 1, 2026, and continue until the position is filled. The Department encourages applicants who have experienced career interruptions for parental or other types of leaves to apply.

Please note that reference and background checks, including credential and degree verification, may be undertaken as part of this recruitment process.
