Position Description

The Department of Statistics at the University of Virginia (UVA), College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. All research areas in Statistics are considered, with special interest in candidates whose research complements, but does not precisely duplicate, existing departmental expertise. Student interest in statistics research at all levels continues to increase, due to the department’s camaraderie and its faculty’s diverse interdisciplinary collaborations. We welcome those whose research and teaching span statistical methodology and computing across numerous disciplines, including UVA’s Grand Challenges; see research.virginia.edu/Grand-challenges. The Department of Statistics at UVA was established in 1989 and offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics. It currently has 21 research and teaching faculty. Since 2014, the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences has made significant investments in the department, leading to a three-fold growth in faculty, a six-fold increase in undergraduate majors, and several new statistics courses, degree programs, and initiatives in the past 10 years. Faculty and students work closely with biostatisticians in the adjacent School of Medicine, as well as with UVA’s Quantitative Collaborative (Social Sciences), School of Data Science, and other departments and schools; interests range from theoretical to applied statistics (including statistics in the physical, medical, and social sciences), with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborations. All faculty supervise a growing number of students at all levels. Centrally located in Virginia, Charlottesville boasts a thriving intellectual community and cultural life, with easy access to recreational venues and convenient travel to Richmond, Washington D.C. and Research Triangle Park, making Charlottesville a very desirable place to live and work. For more information about UVA and the area, please see VisitCharlottesville.org. Qualifications Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field by the start date. The ideal candidate should show strong potential to contribute to the Department’s mission to offer creative and novel research, engage in external funding opportunities, excel in teaching and advising at all levels of students, and provide service to the department, university and professional organizations. Application Instructions To apply, click on Interfolio and attach, as a single pdf file, 1) Cover letter, that summarizes research plans, teaching interests and experience, and skills and experience for advancing UVA’s goal to cultivate a vibrant community to prepare students to be leaders in a diverse, globally-connected world (see https://strategicplan.virginia.edu/strategic-goals); 2) CV; 3) Research agenda, including potential collaborations at UVA; 4) Teaching philosophy and experience; 5) Contact information for at least 3 references.
