Position Description

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to begin in August 2026. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree, or foreign degree equivalent, in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Successful candidates must exhibit promise for developing and maintaining a robust program of externally funded research, teaching courses in the department at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and providing academic and professional service. Please visit https://science.rpi.edu/mathematical-sciences for more information about the department.

Our department seeks candidates whose research develops and applies mathematical frameworks toward the understanding of challenging problems with societal or technological impact in areas such as the life sciences, quantum systems, and engineering. We are particularly seeking candidates who employ mathematically principled approaches for the design and analysis of novel simulation and computational methodologies, including those pertaining to data science, scientific machine learning, and optimization. Of special interest are candidates whose work could support RPI's initiatives in quantum research and education, or more broadly could align with the objectives of the Future of Computing Institute. This position is part of a faculty cluster hire funded by support from the Simons Foundation designed to stimulate research in the basic sciences across New York State.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, research and teaching statements, and at least four letters of recommendation, one of which addresses teaching potential, to MathJobs.Org. Applications received by October 31, 2025 will be given first consideration, and later applications will continue to be accepted and evaluated while the position remains open.

Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.

RPI is committed to the cultivation of a community that is welcoming, inclusive, and above all values learning. We welcome candidates who bring a variety of perspectives to RPI's work and campus communities. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or other characteristic protected by law.
