Position Description
Department of Mathematical Sciences
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
Troy, New York
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow to begin on August 16, 2026 (or much sooner). The candidates must hold, or expect to obtain prior to the start date, a Ph.D. in (Applied) Mathematics or a closely related discipline, with a strong background in scientific computing and numerical analysis.
The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with Dr. Fengyan Li and her research group in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), together with collaborators at Virgina Tech and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. The research will focus on computation-based and/or data-driven reduced order models for PDEs, especially with applications to kinetic equations arising from plasma physics and radiation/neutron transport. The position will start with a one-year appointment and is renewable for an additional year, pending satisfactory performance (two years in total).
Required qualifications include 1) a strong background in the development and/or analysis and/or application of numerical methods for PDEs; 2) experience in implementation of numerical methods. Candidates with interest and experience with numerical methods for hyperbolic and/or kinetic equations and complexity reduction techniques will be given preference.
Evaluation of applications will be conducted on a rolling basis. Applications submitted by December 1, 2025 will be given first consideration. Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a research statement, and (at least) three letters of recommendation to MathJobs.Org. Inquiries should be sent directly to Dr. Fengyan Li (lif@rpi.edu).
