University of Vienna
1) Applications are invited for
2 PhD-student positions
starting respectively on April 1, 2026 and June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointments are limited to three years and no teaching duties are implied. The basic salary corresponds to the collective agreement for employees of the universities according to § 48 VwGr. B1 basic level (praedoc): e 2.786,10 (30h/week, 14 times per year).
The successful candidates will join the the Research Group on Applied Mathematics and Modeling led by Ulisse Stefanelli at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna. The positions are associated with the enrolment in the PhD program in Mathematics at the University of Vienna. The PhD projects will connect with the current research activities of the Group. In particular, they will be related to the mathematical modeling of growth processes, drawing on techniques from calculus of variations, partial differential equations, and applications. Potential projects include the analysis of partial differential equations on growing domains and accretive fronts, mathematical modeling of growth in complex systems, and control and optimization of growth in PDE-driven processes. The specific thesis projects will be developed collaboratively with the successful applicants. A strong background in partial differential equations and calculus of variations is required.
In addition, successful candidates will join the Vienna School of Mathematics. This is a joint doctoral initiative of the University of Vienna and TU Wien, providing enhanced training and networking opportunities.
