Position Description

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Iowa invites applications for an instructional-track faculty positions at all ranks beginning August 2026. This is an instructional-track faculty position; the track does not include the possibility of tenure, but otherwise parallels the tenure track with various ranks (Assistant Professor of Instruction, Associate Professor of Instruction, Professor of Instruction). The position is renewable in one-year increments for the first three years, and renewable for periods up to three, five, and seven years depending on rank. As a faculty member, an instructional-track faculty participates in departmental governance with voting rights and is expected to contribute to the culture of excellence in the department and the university.

Applications are sought from candidates who have: 1) a commitment to engaged student learning in undergraduate mathematics education, including the use of inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices; 2) experience as primary instructor of introductory mathematics courses; 3) a willingness and experience to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to reform and sustain aspects of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum; and 4) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely related field by the starting date to be qualified for the position.

The instructional-track faculty will principally contribute to instruction in introductory mathematics courses, including helping to build capacity for general education mathematics courses. This may include development of mathematics courses related to Communication, Literacy, Sustainability, Culture, Society, and the Arts. They may also contribute to courses as needed. Often the faculty will work in a team setting with several instructors contributing to a single course. In addition to teaching lecture portions of courses, instructional track faculty also supervise graduate teaching assistants assigned to these classes, develop new curricula, and engage in other professional activities and services. The department has a history of collaboration with campus partners such as the Center for Teaching, the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, and the Office of Academic Success and Retention. Instructional-track faculty use these resources to develop research-supported instructional practices and tools to improve students’ success.
