Fellowship Description

Dr. Blaise Bourdin, Canada Research Chair in Mathematical and Computational Aspects of Solid Mechanics is expected to hire up to two Postdoctoral Fellows in 2026.

The first position is part of the Structural Alloys for Fatigue Endurance (SAFE) project jointly supported by the U.S. NSF at Caltech, Carnegie Melon University and Case Western Reserve University and NSERC at McMaster. As part of this project, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow involved in phase-field computational studies of fatigue in alloys. The candidate will have a solid background in applied mathematics, solid mechanics, and computational science. Prior knowledge of phase-field methods is an asset but not strictly required. Experience dealing with large scale computing, high-performance computing, and high performance clusters is a must.

The second position is flexible, targeting candidates with a strong applied mathematics background in one or several of the following topics: analysis of free discontinuity problems, convex optimization and applications to large scale problems, nonlinear preconditioners in high performance computing, computational mechanics, the PETSc toolkit, or PDE-constrained optimization. Any project is expected to include a significant computational component, and the candidate is expected to possess some programming experience in C/C++, python, and/or Fortran.

The expected duration of the appointments are two years and will include a limited amount of teaching. To learn more about the department, please visit www.math.mcmaster.ca. The fellowships normally start on August 1, 2026, and provide an annual stipend salary of at least $60,000, plus a $2,000 grant for research expenses.

Candidates are required to apply for this fellowship by using the MathJobs website by January 5, 2026 for full consideration. See our advertisement at www.mathjobs.org. Applicants should provide a letter of application, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement and at least three letters of recommendation, of which at least one should report on the candidate's teaching abilities. These letters must be submitted electronically through the MathJobs website (see above). For further information about these fellowships, please contact Dr. Blaise Bourdin (bourdin@mcmaster.ca).

We appreciate all replies to this advertisement, but only applicants under consideration will be contacted. We appreciate all replies to this advertisement, but only applicants under consideration will be contacted.
