Position Description

The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track
FRG Postdoctoral Fellow position, to begin August 1, 2026. The initial appointment will be for one year, but extension for an additional year is expected, for two years total.
This position combines a grant-focused research postdoctoral position with a standard math lecturer position. We seek candidates with research expertise in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, symplectic geometry, or closely related areas and with teaching experience at the college level.
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is a public R1 university, located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. It is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai'i system, with a vibrant research culture.
The department serves a very diverse student population from Hawai'i and beyond from introductory service courses through to the PhD level. Candidates should be enthusiastic about engaging with students with broad life experiences.
This position is half funded by an NSF Focused Research Group project that aims to deepen connections between commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and symplectic geometry through concrete use of homological mirror symmetry. The FRG Postdoctoral Associate will be mentored by project PI (Daniel Erman) and is expected to engage in FRG activities, including the FRG virtual seminar. Applicants are asked to address their fit within this program in their cover letter. A novel aspect of the position is that this NSF FRG Postdoctoral Associate will have the opportunity to select a secondary member from among the other project PIs (Matthew Ballard, Christine Berkesch, Michael Brown, David Favero, Andrew Hanlon, or Sheel Ganatra). Applicants are encouraged to address, in their cover letter, who they would select as a secondary mentor as well as address their fit to the FRG project aims.
We also seek candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching, commensurate with career stage. The position has a “2/2” load, i.e. a teaching load of 2 courses per academic semester. Salary is competitive. Applicants should have received or expect to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics or its equivalent no later than July 31, 2026. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, per NSF requirements.
Electronic application at www.mathjobs.org is preferred. Applications and supporting
documents may instead be mailed to
