Summary

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position beginning August 2026. This is a renewable, non-tenure-track 9-month faculty position with opportunities for career advancement. This role is focused on teaching foundational undergraduate courses in mathematics, including College Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus I and II, and Linear Algebra. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting student success, retention, and diversity within the department’s strategic initiatives.

Michigan Tech is committed to fostering a welcoming, innovative, and rigorous educational environment. Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, actively engaging with students inside and outside the classroom, developing and updating curricula, mentoring students, and coordinating multi-section courses. The department has a target Calculus I maximum class size of 45. There is potential to teach upper-level courses and advise undergraduate research projects based on experience and interest.

Candidates with sufficient qualifications and experience may also be considered for an Associate Teaching Professor appointment.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

• In person teaching load of three courses per semester (9-12 credit hours) • Actively engaging with students inside and outside the classroom • Developing and updating curricula • Mentoring students • Coordinating multi-section courses • Must be willing and able to contribute to Department, University, and external professional service activities

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline (or imminent completion by August 2026)

Required Experience

Demonstrated commitment to high-quality undergraduate teaching

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Demonstrated classroom excellence • Experience/interest in teaching courses to prepare students for Calculus • Experience with best practices for teaching and learning such as project based learning, interactive classrooms, etc. • Experience using automated/electronic/online homework platforms and/or Learning Management Systems (LMS) • Management responsibility for a full class (planning/scheduling/syllabus writing/grading etc.) • Interdisciplinary experience with STEM education • Involvement with undergraduate research

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
