Scope of Job:
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Mathematics, to begin in Fall 2026, one based on the Edinburg campus and one on the Brownsville campus.
We seek candidates with strong research potential in any area of Mathematics.
Successful
candidates will be expected to develop and maintain a productive, independent
research program that has the potential to attract extramural funding, actively
contribute to departmental and programmatic growth, and demonstrate excellence
in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty in these
positions are also expected to strengthen and complement the School’s Ph.D.
program and to contribute to the academic and local community through
mentorship, collaboration, and service consistent with the mission of UTRGV.
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) comprises over 40 tenured and tenure-track faculty actively engaged in research across pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. The School offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mathematics and Statistics, including a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications. Overall, SMSS has over 100 graduate students and around 280 undergraduate majors. With a strong focus on graduate education and high-quality research, SMSS plays an integral role in advancing the University’s goal of attaining Carnegie R1 status. SMSS is a multi-campus unit, with faculty and programs located in Edinburg and Brownsville; one position is based on the Edinburg campus and the other will be based on the Brownsville campus, a growing hub for research and academic excellence in South Texas.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Mathematics from an accredited institution (earned by the start date of the appointment).
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated potential for independent research and scholarly productivity in Mathematics.
- Demonstrated potential for effective teaching and mentoring of students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in Mathematics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral research experience demonstrating continued scholarly development.
- Evidence of an active and productive research program with a record of, or clear potential for, publication in high-quality journals.
- Demonstrated potential to secure extramural research funding.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in using technology, innovative pedagogy, or evidence-based instructional practices to enhance student learning.
