Position Description

The George Mason University Center for Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (CMAI) and Department of Mathematical Sciences invite applications for a 12-month Postdoctoral Research Fellow position. The position is subject to the availability of funds.

Located just 20 miles from Washington, D.C., George Mason University is uniquely positioned for collaborations with multiple academic institutions, government laboratories, and industry partners in the D.C.–Maryland–Virginia region. GMU has a strong institutional commitment to excellence and to increasing the diversity of its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages applications from candidates who will enrich GMU’s academic environment.

Research Area and Environment.
The successful candidate will work directly with the CMAI faculty. Broadly, the group’s activities lie at the interface of

  • optimization and nonsmooth/nonconvex analysis,
  • PDE-constrained optimization and optimal control,
  • numerical analysis and scientific computing
  • risk-averse and fractional models,
  • digital twins and data-assimilating models,
  • machine learning and neural networks (including operator learning and surrogates),
  • applications to Maxwell’s equations, fluid dynamics, multiphysics systems, quantum and control problems, and autonomous systems.

Candidates whose research interests intersect with one or more of these themes are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities.

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research under the mentorship of Prof. Antil.
  • Participate in ongoing projects in CMAI and help develop new directions aligned with the group’s interests.
  • Contribute to joint publications, grant proposals, and presentations at leading conferences and workshops.
  • Interact with graduate and undergraduate students; opportunities exist for mentoring and co-supervision of student research.
  • Teaching is not required for this position. However, if desired, the fellow may have the opportunity to teach courses in the Department of Mathematical Sciences by separate arrangement.

The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of yearly extensions depending on performance and the availability of funds. The start date is flexible, with an anticipated start sometime in 2026.

Minimum Qualifications.

  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field by the start date.
  • A strong background in at least one of the following: optimization, PDEs, optimal control, numerical analysis/scientific computing, or machine learning for differential equations and control.
  • Evidence of research excellence and potential for high-impact publications.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Application Materials.
Applicants should submit the following through the MathJobs system:

  1. Cover letter describing fit with the position and CMAI.
  2. Curriculum vitae (including publication list).
  3. Research statement.
  4. At least three letters of recommendation (with at least two addressing research).

Application Deadline.
Review of applications will begin immediately. For full consideration, all materials should be received by
December 31, 2025.

Contact.
Interested candidates should apply via the MathJobs system and may contact
Prof. Harbir Antil at hantil@gmu.edu with any questions about the position or research environment.
