Position Description

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a full-time Faculty position in Mathematics with a focus on Statistics and Machine Learning. The successful candidate will conduct both Research and Teaching activities to a level compatible with the standards of Sorbonne Université. In particular, (s)he is expected to produce very-high-level research output, to nurture her/his Research network and to actively engage in the Research Themes developed around the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) which has been established in January 2020, on both Paris and Abu Dhabi campuses. We will consider top-tier applicants whose research sits at the interface of rigorous Mathematics and data-driven methodology, with particular emphasis on Mathematical and Applied Statistics as well as Machine/Deep Learning. Candidates who pair a strong mathematical/theoretical foundation with hands-on experience in modern statistical-learning techniques are especially attractive. As for the teaching duties/assignments, the new Faculty will be mainly engaged in teaching intermediate to advanced undergraduate courses in Analysis, Algebra, Probability and Stochastic Processes, Statistics and Data Analysis at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, the successful candidate is expected to teach advanced courses in Theoretical/Applied Statistics and Machine Learning. The typical teaching load amounts to 192 hours per academic year, translating in roughly 7 teaching hours per week for 28 weeks. It is worthwhile noting that the programs are designed by Sorbonne Université – Faculté des Sciences in France, and courses are delivered exclusively in English. The Undergraduate Courses follow the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), and the degrees are awarded by Sorbonne Université - Paris. Moreover, the recruited Faculty is expected to serve on committees at the University and the Department level, and to engage actively in the department’s activities, including those which contribute to visibility and outreach, e.g. establishing collaborations with local/international companies/institutions. Last but not least, the successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in SCAI-led, industry-oriented projects, collaborating closely with engineering teams to translate theoretical advances into deployable solutions. The candidate will report to the Head of Department and to the Programme Head of the Bachelor in Mathematics.

Requirements:

• PhD is mandatory (in Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related field).
• Minimum 5 years of teaching and research experience in the higher education sector (including PhD experience).
• Original publications in scientific journals or proceedings of scientific conferences.
• International research and scientific presence.
• Languages: English is mandatory. French and Arabic would be an added value.
